A small safavid painted lacquer panel, depicting a youth in dalliance with a maiden at a picnic, a female attendant looking on. persia, perhaps isfahan, second half of the 17th century, rectangular, gouache and gold on wood, border with an undulating vine motif, recessed into cloth-covered mount
The panel probably formed part of a wood door. the figures are in the manner of those in paintings by riza 'abbasi. for two similar panels in the khalili collection, see n. d. khalili, b. w. robinson, t. stanley, lacquer of the islamic lands: part one, london 1996, pp. 30-31, no. 8.
