A Victorian cameo miniature carved by John Nicholson, unmounted, depicting in profile the head of a man facing sinister, signed 'Nicholson' to below shoulder, inscribed on the back 'Nicholson, Cameo Engraver To Her Majesty, Dorking, Surrey', 6.4g, 38 by 31.5 by 3.5mm, in associated box.
Notes: Nicholson exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1848 and 1850, and was included in the Art Manufactures Exhibition of the Society of Arts organized by Henry Cole in 1848. The British Museum holds several examples of Nicholson's cameo profiles.
