£1,600
Good Della Robbia jardiniere, by Gertrude Russell, circa 1904-06, baluster form with a wide everted rim, relief moulded with Bacchanalian nymphs at play and panels of formalised thistles, all picked out in greens and light pink against a dusky blue ground, bordered with leaves and laurel leaf garlands in green, 'DR' ship mark, painted initials and incised 'C' (overseen by Charles Collis), shape number '734', height 24cm, 30cm diameter
NB: In the factory's dispersal auction in 1906, lot 768 is described as 'expensive jardiniere pot relieved with Cupid figures'
This piece has been professionally restored to a high standard.
It would appear that when viewed under ultra violet, the recess beneath the rim may have been drilled for hanging. A patch on the rim restored.
Some restoration on the raised bodies of the cherubs and the evidence of overpainting on the backgrounds to them. Further restoration and overpainting to the footrim. In our view the whole has gone through a process of retouching and restoration where necessary. Some minor old surface abrasions.
