John Ayrton Paris. 'On the Accidents Which Occur in the Mines of Cornwall,' 1817. 'In Consequence of the Premature Explosion of Gunpowder in Blasting Rocks, and on the Methods to be Adopted for Preventing it, by the Introduction of a Safety Bar, and an Instrument Termed The Shifting Cartridge. To which is appended a schedule of Names, Circumstances and Injuries of a large proportion of those Miners who have within a few years suffered from Exploxions, and are in consequence Blind or Totally Disabled,' first edition, 8vo, very good condition, (iii); 4-29;(i) 14 (schedule of accidents) pages, engraved frontispiece, rebound in brown half calf, attractive marbled boards, authors presentation copy, printed and sold by T. Vigurs, Penzance, 1817. The author was a doctor in Penzance and Secretary to The Royal Geological Society of Cornwall before leaving for London, where he was a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons. An important paper on mine safety and a rare first printing (Boase and Courtney 422pp).
