A pair of Chinese Canton famille rose tureens and covers, late 18th century Of ovoid form with entwined strap handles, the covers with acanthus cone finials, painted in colours with scenes noble figures in pavilions and gardens, between borders of butterflies and auspicious flowers. 34cm wide x 27cm high (2) Provenance:The collection of Joseph Ellis (1815-1891), thence by descent to the vendor. Footnote:Joseph Ellis (1815-1891) was a hotelier and amateur photographer who had inherited the Star & Garter hotel in Richmond, but leased, and later bought outright, the Bedford Hotel in Brighton. This was regarded as one of the grandest destinations in the town, beloved of Royalty and the literati of the day. Charles Dickens stayed at the hotel and a letter from the author to Ellis written in 1857 was sold at Bonhams New Bond Street rooms in 2010. By family repute, the tureens in the present lot were acquired from Brighton Pavilion, although this is unconfirmed. Given Ellis's social circle, though, it is not beyond the realms of fantasy that they could have been a Royal gift.
