GREGYNOG PRESS The Celebrated Romance of the Stealing of the Mare Newtown: Gregynog Press, 1930. Translated from the original Arabic by Lady Anne Blunt (Byron's granddaughter) and done into verse by Wilfred Scawen Blunt. An episode from the Romance of Abu Ziad. Number 162 of 275 copies set in Garamond type and printed on heavy Japanese vellum. Press device on title page printed in gold and set within a grey-blue scalloped circle (Device No. 13, Harrop). 12 X 9 ins. ix, 73 pp. Quarter bound in natural hermitage calf with repeat pattern paper covered boards printed in three colours after a design by R.A. Maynard. Gilt title on spine. Hand-coloured and gold illuminated full page frontispiece and 13 large decorated initials by R.A. Maynard. ''It is an opulent production, with gold in the printed version of the Gregynog medallion on the title page, and gold in the large initials. These are so nicely coloured that it is hard to tell where printing ends and brushwork starts. Maynard designed them with precision and white space, forms of flower and leaf with Persian tiles in their ancestry.'' (''The Private Presses'' by Colin Franklin). A near fine copy purchased from Colin & Charlotte Franklin in 1994. Dorothy Harrop notes in ''A History of the Gregynog Press'', ''This binding is more appealing than the special binding''.
