£1,500 - £2,000
AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY FULL MOUNT TAXIDERMY SIBERIAN TIGER, REARING UP ON A FAUX ROCK AND SNARLING, ON A PLINTH BASE (PANTHERA TIGRIS ALTAICA).
Circa 1930. Some characteristics suggest a London taxidermist, possibly Edward Gerrard & Sons or Rowland Ward. (h 167cm x w 180cm x d 90cm). AF.
Provenance: Lot 137 Tennants Auctioneers 19 Oct, 2012.
Age assessment: The stitching, glass eyes and plaster tongue in particular are consistent with other examples of taxidermy being produced in London during this period. The artistic features and base correspond with production around this time. Worn facial areas, rubbing and old restoration are all visible factors of a genuine antique specimen.
