£800 - £1,200
A matching pair (Daisho) of gold shakudo tsuba. Late Edo period, 18th/19th century, Mino Goto School, in box with description. A fine example of Mino-Goto workmanship, with taka-zogan relief showing the twelve animals of the oriental zodiac in gold and shakudo, the rim heavily decorated with various plants including grapes, chrysanthemums and maple, 7.6 x 7cm and 7.3 x 6.7cm. (2) The pieces are unsigned but this is very much the norm for this school. However, it's now considered that the notches on the Hitsu Ana (central hole) are, in their number and configuration, particular to each maker and act as a type of signature that those at the time would have understood. Unfortunately, thus far, no identifying record of this system has been found. This is high end Kinko workmanship and in spectacular condition.
