The book narrates the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, known in Arab history as the Battle of Al-Uqab, a crucial military engagement during the Reconquista, the Spanish medieval effort to conquer occupied Spain back from the Moors, where King Alfonso VIII of Castile and his allies (the Kings of Navarre, Aragon, and Portugal) met against the Berber Muhammad al-Nasir, fourth Almohad caliph in the last years of the 12th century and beginnings of the 13th .
