A BOER WAR CHOCOLATE TIN mounted in a velvet lined gilt frame surmounted by a gesso crown and mounted with a plaque ‘SENT HOME BY JOHN TRACTION DENNIS 2nd Lt. 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers February 1900’.
29 x 21 cms

NOTE: In 1899 Queen Victoria planned to send tins of chocolate as a gift to the troops serving in South Africa. Fry’s, Cadbury’s and Rowntree’s undertook the order for 123,000 tins. The chocolate manufacturers refused to take payment and the Queen funded the production of the tins based on a design by Barclay and Fry of Southwark.
