India Letter/Free. 1833 (Sep 18) Entire letter from Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, South Africa, headed "On His Majestys Service" and addressed to The Paymaster of Pensions, Royal Hospital, Greenwich, redirected to Tower Hill, London. Backstamped "ROMNEY / SHIP LETTER" (S.3) in error, overstruck by boxed "INDIA LETTER / ROMNEY" (In.1) both in black. The 1/1 charge deleted with a red Free datestamp applied, boxed "T.P / Rate 2", the 2d Post charge for a letter transferred from the General Post to the Twopenny Post for delivery. The letter from John Worthy states he is alive and living on the Barque "Essex" lying at the Port Elizabeth whale fishery; his pension is to continue to be paid to the Parish of Kingston to support his family.
