An antique Persian carpet - removed from a Cambridge College, possibly early 20th century from North West Persia - 8.45metres x 4.33 metres - finely woven with approx 15000 knots per sq. metre - wool pile knotted on a cotton warp foundation with two thin locking weft threads per row, rather hard wool pile cut very flat to give excellent clarity - the rug is in reasonable condition for its age but damaged in some areas, the pile is unevenly worn and several low areas indicate pile corrosion, there are no dramatic colour variations, with old restorations - Provenance - Tabriz is most likely origin of the carpet, nearby Najafabad of Sarouq - There are two similar rugs , The Ardabil, which hang in the V and A museum and one in Los Angeles
