A Continental plaster model of the head of the Venus de Medici, modelled after the Antique, second half 20th century; raised on a rectangular stone pedestal; 42cm high overall NOTE: First documented in 1638, when the statue was recorded in a book of engravings of the most beautiful antique in Rome, the Venus was almost certainly known in the 16th century (Haskell and Penny, Taste and the Antique - The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, New Haven and London, 1981).Originally housed in the Villa Medici, the marble was transferred into Florence in 1677, and by 1688 was displayed in the Tribuna of the Uffizi.
