Halfcrown 1861 Fair (a date unrecorded by the Royal Mint). These curious forgeries are made of good metal, raising the question of why they were produced. One idea is that they were made by a dealer in the late 19thC to sell to unsuspecting collectors. Another possibility may be that they were made to 'launder' a quantity of stolen silverware, and marked with unusual dates to identify them. These 1861 Halfcrowns appear on the market from time to time, always in low grade. The portrait is wrong for the era, and is more like a late young head issue circa 1887.
