HIGHEST RECORDED PREPAID 4d-POST RATE ("P 2/-"; ABOVE 2oz & UP TO 3oz) - COVER EX NEWCASTLE ON TYNE: Fine 24 Dec. 1839 E (small closed tear at top well clear of all marks and address) from Newcastle (v. fine cds across join) to Edinburgh endorsed "Prepaid" on the front with a manuscript "P 2/-" rate on the front partly overlapped by a very fine red Edinburgh Xmas Day "PAID" arrival cds. Only three other examples of this extremely high prepaid rate - which would have been charged 4s-0d if sent unpaid - have been recorded (see JG-T's 'International Postal Reforms', p. 563).
