Property of a lady - a Chinese famille rose armorial punch bowl, Qianlong period (1736-1795), painted with butterflies & scattered flowers, the interior with large armorial heraldic crest, stapled repairs, 15.75ins. (40cms.) diameter; together with a matching circular charger, again with stapled repairs, 16.15ins. (41cms.) diameter (2) (see illustration). Provenance - by repute General Sir Robert John Hay KCB (1828-1910), Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery, who served as Assistant Adjutant General of Artillery in China at the end of the Second Opium War, and was present at Sinho, Tangku, the capture of Tahu Forts and the surrender of Pekin in 1860, and thence by family descent to the present vendor.
