An 18th century French fan c 1775, with straw applied to the silk leaf, forming flowers, painted with a pastoral scene, friends gathering to play music, musical instruments and flowers and birds to the reserves, gold sequins applied in meandering swags and as borders, the verso painted simply with flowers, mounted on good carved, shaped and pierced mother of pearl sticks, gilded, with figures to the upper guards, guard approx. 27.5cm , purchased in 2006 at the Christie’s sale of the Paul Van Saanen collection of fans, lot 181
Two or three discreet splints applied to three gorge sticks. Possibly a period repair to the upper section of the lower guard, felt rather than seen. The silk is in good order but is a little dry so possibly with period restoration.
