PROBABLY GERMAN, SUBSTANTIAL EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY CARVED OAK COFFER CARVED WITH THE INITIALS DVH AND THE DATE 1714, the planked top above a four panelled front profusely carved with arches, foliate scrolls and overlapping leaves, raised on heavy compressed bun feet, 25” (63.5cm) high, 71 ½” x 24” (181.6cm x 61cm)
Footnote: By family tradition the letters DVH and date 1714 appertain to Sophia, electress and duchess-dowager of Hanover (1630-1714), heiress presumptive to the British throne. After her death in 1714 her son elector George Louis of Brunswick-Luneburg acceded to the British throne as King George I, upon the death of Queen Anne (her first cousin)
