Advertising Poster National Women Demonstration UK Strike Rupert Murdoch Wapping. Original vintage poster advertising a National Womens Demonstration in support of the 1986 News International Strike. In January 1986, 5,500 News International Group workers were sacked after refusing to sign altered contracts when the owner Rupert Murdoch moved the printing works from Fleet Street to Wapping. The strike - also known as the Wapping Affair - failed in 1987 and was a significant factor in the decline of trade union influence in Britain. The poster shows a crowd of women of different ages and professions holding up a large red banner which displays details of the march in white text. Organised by the SERTUC (South and East Region of the Trades Union Congress), the demonstration took place Saturday 2nd August. Excellent condition. Country of issue: UK, designer: Strike Graphics, size (cm): 51x38, year of printing: 1986.
