In late 1979, the Jaguar XJ range was facelifted. Using the long-wheelbase version of the car, the XJ incorporated a subtle redesign by Pininfarina. The most obvious changes over the SII were the thicker and more incorporated rubber bumpers with chrome on the top edge, flush door handles, a one-piece front door glass, a grille with only vertical vanes, reverse lights moved to the larger rear light clusters and a revised roofline with narrower door frames and increased glass area. There were three engine variants, including the 5.3 lt V12, the 4.2 lt straight-six and 3.4 L straight-six. The larger six-cylinder, and V12 models incorporated Bosch fuel injection which was made under licence by Lucas. 132,952 Series III cars were built, 10,500 with the V12 engine.
With just 2 previous owners, this Jaguar Series 3 V12 Sovereign comes with a huge history file, including the original Jaguar book pack. This Sovereign is a vey solid example and presents well, but is now starting to suffer in the usual places such as the bottom of front wings and corners of one wheel arch. As such, any new owner would perhaps want to refresh the lower half of the car to bring it back to being an excellent example. But in all, the paintwork has a very good lustre showing how well the car has been cared for.
The interior is immaculate, with unmarked cream leather with red piping, and the carpets showing no real signs of wear at all. All the electrics work with the exception of the cruise control, but the air con does blow ice cold. The engine is smooth and quiet and gear changes are as you would expect in a car such as this.
In all, it's a well looked after, low owner Sovereign that would easily be back to it's best without much effort.
