* Hugh Walpole was an eager collector of Grant's work and this subject is typical of the artist's work in the late 1920s and early1930s, executed in this swift and spontaneous manner. The lidded vase is a familiar motif in compositions from this period but this is more probably a London subject or one painted at Vanessa Bell's house in Cassis than at Charleston.
