** PORCHESTER CASTLE - P.O.W. LETTER SMUGGLED(?) TO FRANCE (WITH "48/CARENTAN" MARK); 8 Apr. 1800 EL (worthy of full transcription; some wear around edge folds) from "Jacques Angibane" in "Portchester" to a ship-owner in Bordeaux asking for the Prize Money due to him from when he was on the privateer 'La Gironde', and help in general, and stating that he had sent a Power of Attorney to Bordeaux lawyer "La Fargue". The letter is uncensored and the only postal marks are a fine "48/CARENTAN" and a "24" charge which suggest that it was sent by private means (smuggled?) from England. [Not recorded in MFPWE.] Cross Reference: FRANCE, HAMPSHIRE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL
