A CHINESE PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A MALE ATTENDANT, TANG DYNASTY, WITH BOX. The figure dressed in a robe painted in a pale green pigment, wearing hat and boots detailed in black. Fitted in a later wooden box with sliding cover. A note to the interior noting 'The sliding lid of the box originally bore an inscription in pencil which has completely faded away; it read: Unearthed near Turpan', located in the Xinjiang region of China. Tang dynasty (618-907). Figure 24cm tall. Box 29cm. Provenance: Ex-Phillip Allen Collection.
The figure with a wooden dowel up through the feet, probably up to the head where the head has been detached. Crack at the lower section to front above the boots.
