Carbine: A Sharps Model 1855 British Cavalry Carbine. Calibre .577. Made 1855-57. total quantity of 6,000. Breech loading percussion carbine with Maynard's Patent Tape Primer. (Marked 'Edward Maynard Patentee 1845') Barrel tang marked 'Sharps Patent 1848'. Brass buttplate, tang marked '6-D (over) 687' = 6th Dragoons*. Carbine rack number 687. Silver ornate unofficial panel to rear of buttstock. Saddle ring bar, iron barrel band. Walnut stock. Repaired barrel 18". British proofs to barrel. Good stock repair to wrist of stock. In good condition for age. These carbines saw service throughout the British Empire and some made their way back to the U.S. during the Civil War. * Note: The 6th Dragoons would have been issued with this carbine in India during the period covered by the Indian Mutiny (10 May 1857 to 1859). They were part of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava, Inkerman & Sebastopol. Carbine issued from 1857 to India.
