Thomas Bewick (1753 - 1828) - The Setting Sun Public House by John Spendthrift, s.l., s.n., n.d. [1820], proof?, margin with contemporary manuscript inscription, wood engraving, 10 x 14cm
A Hogarthian satire designed by Bewick for use in The Genteel Sabbath Breaker (1820), a tract by the Rev. Robert Tweddell, defending the sanctity of the Sabbath, and in which the effects of liquor are demonstrated in the most straightforward way. The latter temperance movement point illustrated here with obvious parallels to Hogarth's Gin Lane (1751).
Provenance: 1) 'Designed and engraved by the celebrated Bewick, for a tract by the Revd. R: Tweddell '; contemporary ink MS inscription to margin. 2) The Reverend Benjamin Arthur Marshall, incumbent of St. Cuthbert's Church, Carlisle (1853-1874); 2pp ALS to verso, dated The Parsonage, Carlisle, 18 Sep 1873, presenting the 'sketch ', to a R.S. Ferguson.
A well-margined sheet. Toned in places, the margin with a soiled fingerprint.
