An Important Phoenician Model, 4th/5th Century BC A rare terracotta model hippoi style boat, 31.8cm long. Acrylic and wire base. Although of a votive nature these models are thought to represent real vessels and as such they point to the Phoenician naval prowess The boat in shape, size and style is near identical to two examples in the Hecht Museum in Haifa, Israel. This example found at an unknown underwater site, Levantine Sea, Eastern Mediterranean and acquired by Rex Cowan in the 1970's. The model is intact. A repair has reconnected the lower bow. Minor encrustations coat the interior. Surfaces show some history of marine growth and erosion over time.
