AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY SWISS CARVED TORTOISESHELL AUTOMATON SINGING BIRD BOX the top engraved with a panel of birds in flight over thorny rose bushes. 9.5 cm x 6.5 cm. Note: Its origins are found in the city of Geneva and its invention in 1784/85 is attributed to Pierre Jaquet-Droz. The French term tabatière has also come to be used for any small decorative box resembling a snuff box in form but not necessarily any longer used to contain snuff.
