** BESANCON - ENGLISH P.O.W.'s LETTER WITH "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR"; 17 Aug. 1812 EL (slight dusting and some edge wear) written in English by POW "Wilfrid Mossop, Prisonnier de Guerre Anglais a Besancon" to his mother in Whitehaven charged "1/1" inland rate from London (12 Apr. cds on reverse) with a mainly very fine double-oval London "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" nicely placed on the front. The writer says that "Liberty is granted to send Letters by way of Paris to England, a privilege warmly received by not a few, and perhaps in the course of six weeks or less some return may cause us to be glad...". He also notes the letters he has received but complains that the funds sent from Whitehaven (£29) have not been received.Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W.
