An 1851 Great Exhibition concertina'd peep show, mid 19th century", the illustrated box opening to reveal the view through the main exhibition hall, inscription verso, 14cm x 16cm unextended (at fault)
The piece is very fragile, but appears to be complete.
The box top edges show split joints most of the way round. The paper concertinas show old sellotape in one side of the box lid joint, and the odd small tear to the creases. The first two panels appear to have been reinforced in the concertina with thread, and show the odd loose thread in these cotton joints. The first pictorial panel shows a diagonal tear and losses to some figures. The second panel shows thread and card reinforcement to the back of the top and bottom edges, and later pictoral inserts to the front top and bottom edges. The remaining panels show the odd small loss (mainly to heads), some fading throughout and some areas of staining.
