MADEIRA - EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE BRITISH RECAPTURE OF THE ISLAND; Fine 25 Dec. 1807 EL from "Funchal Bay, Madeira" to Cox & Co. in London written by "Capt. Frederick Liardet" RM who led the successful attacking squadron the previous day, charged "10" (inland rate) with fine "PLYMOUTH DOCK/220" mileage mark on the reverse, being carried home on a Naval ship presumably by a friend. Contents (full typed transcript) include; "Madeira surrendered to the British Forces the 24th of Decr....each Line of Battle Ship had a Fort assigned to her...the Troops were to land under cover of the ships' fire. Each corps was provided with scaling ladders...the whole chain of forts in the Bay were to be carried by assaults...
