** CREDITON (DEVON) - COVER EX POST-TRAFALGAR P.O.W. ON PAROLE ENDORSED "PP/F Single" IN RED; Fine 24 Mar. 1806 EL (unsealed; as per censor regulations?) from POW "S. Cartettan", a Naval Officer on parole in "Crediton dans le Devonshire" sent to his parents in Paris routed via London charged "8" (decimes) on delivery. The meaning of the red manuscript "PP/F Single" annotation at top right of the address is still not clear but may well indicate "Postage Paid to the Frontier for a single-sheet letter" (although that postage was not paid to the Crediton P.O. in this case). One of only 3 Crediton POW covers recorded in MFPWE. A fascinating description of the writer's capture on 3 Nov. 1805 only 2 weeks after he had been involved in the Battle of Trafalgar; he describes being taken to a Prison Hulk in Plymouth before being transferred (initially on foot) to Crediton where he was finally allowed to be on parole but not allowed out from 7pm until 8am, etc. [With Van der Linden cert. of genuineness, 2011.] [See MFPWE, p.104.]Cross Reference: DEVON, MILITARY - P.O.W.
