A BOER WAR AND FIRST WORLD WAR GROUP OF FOUR TO THE ROYAL NAVY. A group of four comprising Queen's South Africa Medal named to Act Carpr J.C. Burt R.N. H.M.S. Gibraltar. 1914-15 Star named to Carp J.C. Burt R.N. War Medal and Victory Medal similarly named. John Cooper Burt, was born in Littlehampton, Sussex on the 3rd November 1868. A Shipwright by occupation he enlisted with the Royal Navy to pursue this profession on the 23rd September 1891. He was killed in an incident in H.M.S. Bulwark which destroyed the ship whilst at anchor in the River Medway on the 26th November 1914. The Times reported 'The band was playing and some of the men were drilling on deck when the explosion occurred. A great sheet of flame and quantities of debris shot upwards, and the huge bulk of the vessel lifted and sank, shattered, torn and twisted, with officers and men aboard...' Burt was one of 788 men who lost their lives that day. He was 46 years old, his body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
