λ A rare printed Jacobite fan, the leaf a hand-coloured etching by Sir Robert Strange of the young pretender Prince Charles Edward Stuart in armour, he is attended by Cameron of Lochiel depicted as Mars and Flora Macdonald as Bellona, fame holds a laurel wreath over his head, Venus and Cupid to the left and Britannia to whom a dove brings an olive branch, on the right, Jupiter strikes down Envy and Discord with thunderbolts whilst the family of Hanover retreats, with finely carved and pierced ivory guards and sticks, the upper guards backed with red foil, contained in its original red morocco leather case, circa 1745, length 28.5cm, note: for a similar fan see Christies lot 117 London, South Kensington 10 December 1996
