Henry VIII silver Groat, second coinage (1526-1544), London mint, sunburst mintmark (S 2337E, North 1797). Obverse: Laker bust D, right facing crowned profile bust with 'HENRIC' x VIII' x D' x G' x AGL' x Z x FRANC'' around. Reverse: long cross fourchee over a shield of royal arms with another sunburst mintmark and the words 'POSVI DEV' xx ADIVTORE xx MEV' around. Weight: 2.46g. Diameter: 26mm. Grade: VG/aF - round flan with a few obverse scratches; Very Good/around Fine. The unusual sunburst mintmark seems only to have been used briefly in 1537. It is thought that the mark, depicting sunshine after rain, celebrates the birth of the future King Edward VI, Henry's only surviving son.
