£110
2016 William Shakespeare's Tragedies skull and rose error edge circulating £2 coin from The Royal Mint. Obverse: Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with a legend around that reads 'ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·'. Reverse: skull and rose with 'WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE' above and the date (2016) below. Edge: 'FOR KING AND COUNTRY ·'. Composition: nickel-brass/cupro-nickel. Weight: 11.98g. Diameter: 28.4mm. Mintage: 4,615,000 (total annual issue). Finish: circulated. The edge of 2016 Tragedy £2 coins should read 'WHAT A PIECE OF WORK IS A MAN' - a line spoken by Prince Hamlet in Act II, Scene 2 of William Shakespeare's play. Instead, the edge of this rare example reads 'FOR KING AND COUNTRY ·', which is the inscription used on the 2016 Army £2 issued in the same year to celebrate the centenary of the First World War. Shakespeare Two Pounds are already popular and this error edge, from an unknown mintage of similar coins with this production error, would make a nice addition to any collection of modern Royal Mint rarities.
