A Sasanian incantation bowl 6th-7th century AD The buff earthenware bowl of conical form, the interior inscribed with a spiralling Aramaic script. 16cm dia. Provenance:The property of Andrew Parker, lead researcher at the Natural History Museum, London. Footnote:Aramaic incantation bowls are particular to the Sasanian period and have been found in the regions of modern-day Iraq. These simple ceramic bowls, also known as magic bowls, each contain an Aramaic inscription, written in ink, which spirals from the centre. The bowls seem to have played an important part in domestic life and are predominantly apotropaic, the inscriptions intended to protect their owners from misfortunes, illness and evil spirits. Condition:Mild pitting and light surface deposits to the outside. Interior fair with some fading to the script. Small open air bubble to the inside wall.
