** AMIENS - ENGLISH P.O.W.'s LETTER WITH "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR"; 6 Jan. 1814 EL (worn folds and speckling/dusting affecting address side & flaps) written in English by POW "Peter Bussell" in the "Citadel of Amiens" to his married twin sister and his children (whose mother had died) - addressed to his brother-in-law - charged "10[d]" inland rate from London (10 Mar. cds on reverse) to Weymouth with a mainly very fine double-oval London "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" inverted on the front. The writer notes that he has just undertaken a 300-mile march from the POW Camp in Besancon but is very well, although the 100 letters awaiting the POWs in Amiens did not include one for him; he says that "Eight years of my Captivity is nearly run...". Napoleon abdicated less than a month after this letter reached London. Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, DORSET
