A RARE BRITISH & NORTH AMERICAN ROYAL MAIL COMPANY (LATER KNOWN AS CUNARD LINE) IRONSTONE SOUP BOWL, CIRCA 1860

sepia-toned Gothic arch pattern transfer printed rim with company device to centre, the reverse impressed 'Real Ironstone China' with transfer of company name within a garter -- 9¼in. (23.5cm.) diameter

According to Peter Laister's Mariners Memorabilia, this pattern dates to around 1860, although the ironstone marks on the reverse may indicate it to be a little earlier. The beginning of Queen Victoria's reign heralded a Gothic revival, famously incarnated in Pugin's new Parliament building.
