EUGENIO GIGNOUS (ITALIAN 1850 - 1906) VIEW OF LAKE MAGGIORE, circa 1885. Watercolour on paper, laid on card, signed lower right. 73 x 54cm frame, 53 x 34cm painting.
More About the artist: Eugenio was born into the family of a silk merchant in August of 1850, in the city of Milan. He showed from a very young age a talent for art, and in 1864 he began attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Brera, studying landscapes under the tutelage of Luigi Ricciardi & later Gaetano Fasanotti.
He associated with various artist movements over his lifetime including the ‘Scuola di Rivara’ and later under the influence of his close friend Tranquillo Cremona he joined the Scapigliatura group. The movement included poets, writers, painters who followed a bohemian lifestyle.
From the 1870s onwards Gignous focused his skills on landscapes such as the one showing here today, working ‘en plein air’. Influenced by such artists as Filippo Carcano he began visiting Lake Maggiore in 1879, which began his devotion to reproducing views of the areas of Mottarone, Val d’Ossola and Verbano – moving to this area in 1887 where he and his wife settled in Stresa.
The view in the painting in Lot 6 we believe is a view from Isola Superiore looking towards the hamlet of Feriolo.
