A JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD LARGE LACQUER (HIROBUTA) PRESENTATION TRAY, late 19th/early 20th century, by Shikuniko Hanamaru of the Sakakyu Lacquerware Company of Honpo, of rectangular form with straight sides, decorated with four roundels variously made of leafy bamboo, flowering branches of prunus, narcissi and chrysanthemum, in gold and coloured hiramaki-e on the nashigi ground, with some details rendered in raden (mother of pearl inlays), signed Saito at the back; height 5 cm x length 76 cm x width 45.5 cm; together with a tomobako wood box, inscribed with 'Four gentlemen Hanamaru maki-e Wajima lacquer, wide tray, Saito family'

General surface wear. There are two cracks to the lacquer in two corners of the tray down from the top rim towards the base, approx. 2-3 cm long. One corner inside the tray also has a crack. The box has scratches and wear commensurate with age.
