A LARGE JAPANESE BRONZE FIGURE OF SAMURAI SAIGŌ TAKAMORI, TADAO KOGA, SIGNED, 20TH CENTURY. Tadao Koga, a Japanese sculptor born in 1903, Inscribed wooden box. Measures 57cm high, x 19cm wide x 18cm deep. Weight 11.7kg.
Saigō Takamori (or Takanaga, 1828- 1877) as a Japanese samurai and nobleman. He was one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history and one of the three great nobles who led the Meiji Restoration. Living during the late Edo and early Meiji periods, he later led the Satsuma Rebellion against the Meiji government. Historian Ivan Moris described him as “the quintessential hero of modern Japanese history”.
