POSTCARDS: CUMBRIA & THE LAKE DISTRICT. TRANSPORT. A Collection of approximately 540 Postcards and Photocards in one Album, thematically relating to Transport in the Region. The cards date from the Edwardian era until the mid-20th Century and feature some rare photographic examples of the subjects. Road examples include Horses and Horse drawn carriages, Cars and Charabancs, Buses and Trams including rare Depots. Railway examples include Stations and Lines (many now defunct), Bridges and Viaducts and Locomotives and Rolling Stock and two cards featuring early Railway disasters. Sea and Lakes examples include Pleasure boats, Ferries and Harbours and Water speed record attempts including Malcolm Campbell in Blue Bird K4 on Coniston Water, 19th August 1939 and the ill-fated Miss England II disaster on Lake Windermere, Friday, 13th June 1939 when the pilot, Sir Henry Seagrave was killed. Air Transport examples include pre-WWI Bi-planes, Hydroplanes and two images of The Vickers' Naval Airship No.1 in Cavendish Dock Barrow, September 1911, the Airship was nicknamed 'Mayfly' ('t May Fly One Day') It never did. Publishers of the cards include Henry Mayson Archive, Sankey's Photo Press, G.P. Abraham, W. Atkinson and Cynicus Publishing, amongst others. Most cards are in good, very good or excellent condition.
