RUKMINI KELKAR (Indian Contemporary), 'City of Dreams', acrylic on canvas, signed & dated verso ('23) 35.5" x 35.5" Rukmini Kelkar is a multi disciplinary artist and designer based in Dublin, whose work is a testament to empowerment, diversity, and joy. Originally from Mumbai, India, Rukmini moved to Dublin in January 2017 to join her husband. She trained as a dentist, and practised for five years at her family clinic in Mumbai. However, upon relocating to Ireland, the challenges of the Irish Dental Registration exams prompted her to explore a new path. In 2018, Rukmini turned to art for solace, teaching herself to paint through YouTube tutorials. She quickly discovered that art was not just a hobby, but her true passion and therapy. This newfound love led her to enrol in a full-time graphic design course, completing her HND in 2020. Rukmini's art is characterized by its bright, colorful, and vibrant nature, designed to evoke joy and happiness. Her pieces often reflect themes of freedom, joy, migration, and regeneration, with a blend of Indian and Irish cultural influences. By celebrating imperfection and depicting strong, imperfect women, Rukmini's work aims to empower viewers and celebrate diversity. Through her brand, Studio 32, Rukmini showcases her design and branding expertise, primarily supporting small immigrant and female-owned local businesses. Currently, she is pursuing an MA in Art and Social Action at NCAD, further deepening her commitment to using art as a medium for social change and empowerment.
