LAST DAY UNIFORM 4d-POST PREPAID; Fine 9 Jan. 1840 EL (fold at centre; clearly dated on reverse) from Customs House, London to Customs Collector and Comptroller at Lynn with fine ms "4" rate, sent on the last day of the Uniform 4d Postage Period. The urgency in collecting duty on 6 hogsheads of American tobacco could not be delayed by 24 hours(!) Few prepaid letters were sent on this date as rate were reduced to only 1d from the next day.
