A Swedish runner, 326 x 67 cm
Provenance: Purchased from private homes throughout Sweden. Swedish rag rugs are highly sought after and increasingly rare. Rag rugs now adorn manor houses, farmhouses and cottages throughout Sweden. The rugs were woven on traditional floor looms when women would gather during the winter months and weave together. The weaving techniques are a combination of 'tuskaft' and 'rosengang'. The rugs were woven using left over and recycled fabric from a typical Swedish household and often incorporate old Swedish workwear, which is traditionally blue. Many Swedish women would have had a number of rag rugs in their wedding chests, often woven by their grandmother. Historically the rag rug would have been used only on special occasions or when receiving guests. Rag rugs were traditionally washed communally in a lake where the owner would jump in too!
