As well as being a fantastic car to drive and to look at, this is a rare and appreciating classic. Enthusiasts have always known that the Porsche 924 was a fine-handling, practical sports car, but recently, as that has become more commonly understood, values of the best examples have been on the rise. That is especially true of the Turbo, of which only 72 were registered on the road last year (production run for the Turbo was only 1980-1983, and they were fairly expensive, so were rare even then).

This Porsche 924 turbo is described by the vendor as a very good example, with a great combination of colour scheme and interior, and a few tasteful (but reversible) modifications to improve the looks, performance, and handling. It is a series 1 car (registered in January 1980), which means that it doesn’t have the DITC electronic ignition module that can sometimes be affected by a troublesome crank sensor.

Porsche Classic gave the original specification as:

Colour Z4Z9 = diamond silver metallic/dolomit grey metallic, Interior GM = leatherette black/checker-velours, Delivered to the UK Dec.'79
Options: 261 = electric mirror passengers side, 288 = headlamp washers, 398 = electric mirror drivers side, 425 = rear wiper, 431 = leather steering wheel and shift boot, 441 = electric antenna,1 speaker in dash and rear side panels, 560 = removable top, 568 = coloured windows & 666 = without paint protection

The car has been owned by the vendor for 3 years, and he is only the third owner. It is showing 70,473 miles on the clock, but had a documented clock change in 1989 when the reading was 54,182 (so the genuine mileage is 124,655 miles). The dashboard, often a weak point on these cars, is in good condition with only a few small cracks, and the special pascha interior has stood up to the test of time very well with only a couple of small tears on the passenger seat. The car has been resprayed prior to the vendors ownership, and the paintwork is very good, with the usual stonechips from use.

It has been maintained regardless of cost, and the history includes bills (some very large) dating back to the early 90s, and stamps in the service book before then. It has just had a full big service including cambelt change, and has an MOT until 1 August, so it’s ready to go.

The modifications currently on the car are Leda front coilovers, adjustable Leda rear shocks, lowered on eccentric adjusters, 16" Rial wheels (7J all round) with nearly new Toyo Proxes tyres, Front mount intercooler from a 944 Turbo - power run after fitting showed 173bhp with boost topping out at 0.5 bar, Re-covered original 4 spoke steering wheel (plus 3 spoke freshly covered in alcantara with boss and horn push available if you prefer the sporty vibe), Blaupunkt Toronto 420BT headunit with Kenwood subwoofer, Hertz speakers and tweeters, Rear seatbelts added (one inertia reel, one fixed point), and a boost gauge. The original wheels, clock, suspension, turbo tube, and induction kit are included should you wish to return it to standard.

Recent new or refurbished parts include the steering column, master and slave clutch cylinders, shift linkage and bushings, starter motor, hatch struts, sunroof and boot seals. The car also has the benefit of a professional underseal and cavity wax treatment from Autowaxworks carried out last spring.

The experience of driving this car is genuinely special, it has a typical 80s turbo rush from 3,000 rpm, and the balance around corners is fantastic. There is space for 2 adults, 2 children and a reasonable amount of luggage, so it can be practical as well, a few members of the owners club use theirs daily. The owners club is a font of knowledge and has many and varied meets, including a spectacular AGM at the Porsche Silverstone experience last year to celebrate 40 years of the 924, it is well worth joining.
