A set of five Chinese 'Door of Hope Mission' dolls, early 20th century Carved and lacquered wood with silk and linen costume, depicting three male and two female figures from varying social classes, 23-26cm, within an associated rosewood casket with bronze corner mounts, 30cm wide. (6) Footnote:Following the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, a non-denominational mission was established in Shanghai to help and support Chinese girls and young women in need of sanctuary from widespread and endemic mistreatment. Among the educative activities and pastimes they engaged in was making, decorating and clothing a range of dolls which were designed to represent men and women of differing social classes. The dolls were sold to generate funds to maintain the mission and its activities.
