FREE FRONT WITH SPECTACULAR PIERCED DECORATION - SENT FROM "BICESTER" ON LAST DAY OF FRANKING; 9 Jan. 1840 free front posted on the Last Day of Franking (and the last day of the 4d-Post Period) with a most attractive pierced and embossed paper design with fleurs de lys and a geometric frame franked by the "[Earl of] Jersey" (1773-1859) from "Bicester" to "Lady Willoughby de Eresby" (the wife of the Lord Chamberlain at the time) in Bourne with a fine red 2-ring crowned London "FREE" cds of "10 JA 10/1840", the First Day of Uniform Penny Postage. Letters franked up to 9 Jan. 1840 were treated as free mail until they were delivered. Most attractive and rare.
