Edward Penniman, born in Massachusetts in 1831, became a whaler captain at just 21. The voyages lasted three-four years and, after his fourth in 1868 he was wealthy enough to build a large Empire-style house on Fort Hill, Eastham, Massachusetts which now bears his name and is run as a hotel.
