A rare George I/II pewter OEWS quart domed-lidded tankard, circa 1720-30
The straight-sided tapering drum with low narrow fillet, particularly tall open chairback thumbpiece, hollow handle with upper escutcheon reinforcement and flush flattened lower attachment, crowned X' and crowned WR mark to rim, together with hallmarks of Robert Iles, London, (fl.1691-1735), (PS5064), and touchmark in base of Home, which has been attributed to John Home (PS15), although he was not free until 1749, 41.5 fl.oz., height 20cm

This tankard appears to be one of the earliest examples with an open chairback thumbpiece. The thumbpiece is certainly of a different design compared to later, more compact, open chairbacks
